Saturday night. May Long Weekend 2010. Mild night, so my bedroom window is open. Two white beams of light shine just above the windowsill; the Victoria Seals are playing their second home game of the season down the hill at Royal Athletic Park, and the white beams are the field lights so the game can carry on after dusk. I can hear some noise from up the road at Topaz Park where Celtic Festival is happening, presumably the aftermath of an all-day beer tent. Everybody’s pumped that they have Monday off. May Long Weekend is unofficially the start of  summer, and everybody is rejoicing accordingly. I’ve got camping invites on Facebook, birthday weekend invites in Vancouver, and all sorts of things I could be doing here in town.

So why am I holed up in my bedroom on a perfectly good Saturday night where a 28-year old guy should, by all rights, be out getting caught up in any one of those things? Read the rest of this entry »

Cabo Post-Mortem

I got in last night from 8 days in Mexico with Scott and his far better half, Leah. On paper, I was the third wheel, but it was never a problem… well, at least not for me. I booked the plane ticket on a bit of a whim right at the new year when I decided it’d be a good idea to go. Plus Scott had to make good on the un-vite he issued to me last year shortly after an invite. Fucking guy. He made good, though.

Foodonomics

So I’m sitting here at the Moka House, a pretty frequent hangout of mine these days, and just went with the Weekly Wildcard Special, the egg salad sandwich. I’m staring at the sonbitch right now: 1 small brown wrap (not the huge ones most people buy at the grocery store), stuffed with alfalfa sprouts, a fist-sized pile of spinach, and what I guess to be two eggs-worth of the tasty shit in the middle of the madness. I think I just paid around 7 bucks for this thing. I conservatively think I can replicate this wrap at home using store-bought ingredients for $2 – nice margins. Read the rest of this entry »
